Expanding the partition containing the operating system on a physi

I have two hard drives, each of which was devided into four virtual drives.
I have run-out of space on the virtual drive containing my operating system,
programs and documents. To expand that virtual drive I deleted two
partitions on the same physical drive. I then went to the Command Prompt,
where I attempted to expand the volume containing my operating system (volume
7 - Drive C). It would not expand. I am assuming this is because it is
the current system partition. How do I extend the capacity of the system
partition? I am using Windows XP Pro.

You go to the local software store and buy Partition Magic. XP does not give
you any kind of option to merge/expand partitions.

For a simple (?) job like this, you might try the freeware program
'Partition Logic' from Partitionlogic.org.uk.
However, IIRC, it only works on NTFS. Check it out on Google.

No. it's not.

Unfortunately, no version of Windows provides any way of changing the
existing partition structure of the drive nondestructively. The only way to
do what you want is with third-party software. Partition Magic is the
best-known such program, but there are freeware/shareware alternatives. One
such program is BootIt Next Generation. It's shareware, but comes with a
free 30-day trial, so you should be able to do what you want within that 30
days. I haven't used it myself (because I've never needed to use *any* such
program), but it comes highly recommended by several other MVPs here.

Whatever software you use, make sure you have a good backup before
beginning. Although there's no reason to expect a problem, things *can* go
wrong.
