The message "It is strongly recommended that you exit all
Windows programs before running this setup program",
often appears when installing new software.

Using Windows Task Manager, "Applications"
and "Processes" currently in use appear.

I close down the "Applications", but how do I figure out
which "Processes" are safe to or should be shut down
before installing new software?

Most of the time you dont need to worry about it. the only thing you might
need to disable is any antivirus software. so if you have it running right
click in the system tray and select shutdown, or uncheck autoprotect.

Only bother about closing down applications - primarily so that if
things reboot there is no data file left open and unsaved. Do that
with their normal close mechanism, after clicking their task bar
buttons.

If you run resident AntiVirus you might be as well to close down its
real time monitoring too, though with the one I use, eTrust, there seems
to be no need. You do not need to get into anything else running in
Processes
