'exe' file extention association missing

Something changed in my system, I do not know why or what did it.
However when I restarted it, only three of my start up applications
started. And I could not open any 'EXE' file extention applications,
I'd get an error message that says:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for preforming
this action. Create an association in the folder options control
panel."

I did as recommended however, nothing happened. I could not find any
associate 'exe' file extentions within the folder options control
panel. So, I created a new one, "exe" and it automaticly assigned it as
'Application'.

However after I completed this nothing changed, I still could not open
any 'EXE' programs. Next I used the system restore to go back a few
days before this occured. This repaired most of my troubles, start up
programs are running however, I still can not open a 'exe' program
except, and this is how I got into system restore on the first problem.

Rather than double left clicking I right clicked and a pop up meneu
opened. then I clicked 'Run as' a window opens and within this winow,
this is checked:

"Protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity"

If I uncheck this and click 'OK' the program will run.

I am the administor and not sure why or what happened to cause this. I
searched this site for "programs will not run" "program will not start"
"This file does not have a program associated with it for preforming
this action. Create an association in the folder options control panel"

and there is no message that deals with this type of problem.

can anybody help? I guess i've got some type of error in my regestry?

Thank you for your quick responces.
From the information posted
The solution was to edit my regestry:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ exefile \ shell \ open \ command

Double-click the (Default) value in the right pane
Delete the current value data, and then type:
"%1" %*
(ie., quote-percent-one-quote-space-percent-asterisk.)

Navigate to: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe

In the right-pane, set (default) to exefile

Exit the Registry Editor.

And btw I don't know who this joker is below:

But, his post and or link was useless, erroneous, and leads to his
Spanish poetry page.

Yes. And if you've seen "Method 1: Fixing the association settings
automatically", there is a link to a fix.

Yes I did Ramesh, thank you. I also saved that page for future trouble
shooting, reference. I am not a total stranger to my regestry, and
prefer to fix manually, to continue becomming aquanted with it.

Could not find a virus, btw.
