Excessively long log-on time

I have a mix of Win 98, Win 2K, and Win XP clients logging on to a single Win
2K Server. On every single Win 2K client, there is an excessive log-on time.
Sometimes the log-on can take up to a half an hour. All have the latest
service packs installed. I have searched the knowledge base with no success.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Usually this is a sign of mis- configured DNS. What DNS server do they point
to?

I had a similar behaviour with an XP machine on a Windows 2000 Domain.
Basically the Domain name displayed the full dns rather than the NetBIOS
Domain name so I removed the '.com' and rebooted the machine. It took a few
seconds to log in.

Rightclick My Computer - Properties - Computer Name - Change - in the
'Member of' check if it displayed the Full DNS entry of the domain. If so,
remove the domain extension.

Tony,

Thanks for the tip. It actually cleared up the problem on my XP machines,
but I still have the problem on the 2K machines. Any further insight would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
Steve
