Excel

I just got a new Compaq computer with Windows XP
installed on it. I now find out I have Microsoft Works
but not Microsoft Word so in turn do not have Excel. Any
suggestions as to how I can download spreadsheets written
in Excel and download them so they can be read. All I
get is gobbly-gook. Any suggestions other than purchase
the Excel program?
