When logging in on my account on Windows XP Professional
it seems start up Excel, which tries to use some macros,
which fail.

I was wondering where do I look to determine exactly is
being run at startup. I do look in the start menu up the
user account but I don't see excel. Is it possible that
somewhere in regedit this is being done?

Start>Run type "msconfig" without the quotes. Look on the Startup tab
and uncheck anything related to Excel.
