Excel spreadsheet causes 100% cpu utilisation

As subject says, this is a large spreadsheet with updating
links through a DDE. Loads fine on another PC. If Excel is
in foreground, CPU stays at 100%. Click out of it and you
can use PC normally. PC is a Compaq Evo 1.7ghz w/256mb
ram. Windows 2000 SP2 and Office SP3. Excel is 2000 vers.
