Excel 2002 hangs while save as function (CPU 100%)

Hi,

I have OfficeXP SP-3 on a Win2K SP-4, all critical updates.
System running on P-3 450mhz with 256MB ram.
I have several xls files ranging in size from 3MB to 8MB.
While trying to use the function "save as" the Excel stop
responding and the CPU usage is at 100%, with every
document.

With Office 2000 there were no problems.

Any 1 has suggestions?

Try doing this:

Start | Run. You do need to use the quotes and the path might need to be
modified to suit your PC.

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /unregserver

then do the same thing, but type

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /regserver

Jack,

You might also try a solution that Bob Bovey has listed in a different post
for a different problem. I am grasping at things to try. This will be a
trial and error solution.

Good luck.

Kevin

Use
Windows Explorer to search all of your hard disks for files with a .XLB
extension. Delete any that you find. Excel uses these files to store
information about its toolbar configuration, but they frequently become
corrupt and cause strange problems like this. Excel will create clean new
default versions after you delete the old corrupt ones, but you will lose
any toolbar customizations you've made.

Hi Kevin,

I didn't notice this one for some reason, but it's on my list of
problems caused by corrupt .xlb files, so it may work. FWIW, here are a list
of crashes/problems that posters have confirmed to me as being solved by
deleting their .xlb files:

- Crash when attempting to Save As.
- Excel will only run in safe mode.
- Excel freezes on attempting to close.
- Errors on open:
System dangerously low on resources.
GPF in user.exe
The instruction at "0x03acc526" referenced memory at "0x07228000" the
memory could not be "read"

I don't know that every instance of these problems are caused by corrupt
..xlb files, but it sure seems to solve a lot of them.

Hi Bob,

Thank you for the information! Let's hope Jack's problem is solved.

Best regards,

We were stumped for a couple days on this same problem
until I came accross this post. We registered Excel to
the registry and everything worked.

Do you know what causes these types of issues? Thanks
again.
