Excel page numbering in the header

In a workbook of nine worksheets, I was able to get numbering like 1 of 9, 2
of 9, etc. as advised by Ragdyer. But there are two problems:
1. The numbering in the center of the header was got by using "page 1 of ?".
But the size of the fonts on the different sheets are different and I can
find no control to be able to adjust these both for size and bold.

2. If I seek to do the same in the spcial header and special footer, my only
choice is to use two icons next to each other--one is like a # sign, and the
other two signs. No matter how I try, I cannot get these two to give page 1
of 9, 2 of 9, 3 of 9, etc.
Although in this case there is an icon which can adjust font, bold, etc.
Another advantage of this method compared to the earlier one is that you can
place the page numbering to the left, center or right.

Would appreciate your advise, amd thank you again.

Group the Sheets you want.
File|page setup|header/footer tab
Fix the header the way you want, like:
Page &[Page] of &[Pages]
The select that whole string
Hit the A icon to adjust the font/boldness of the selected text.

Ok your way out.

That's because these 2 icons *only* perform the calculations for you.
Since you're in the "Custom Header & Footer" section, *you* have to add the
desired "custom" text yourself.

You can copy what the default page numbering setting looks like.

Choose your "Page 1 of ?" default setting in the header.
Now, click on "Custom Header".

You'll see the default setting in the center section.
Click in whatever section you wish to use for your custom header, left or
right.
Click on the Page icon, then the Pages icon.
Now, click and add your text, to match the center section, adding spaces
where necessary.
Then, select *everything* in your custom section, and click on the "A", and
format your text as you wish.
Then hit <OK>.
Now, select *everything* in the center section, and hit <Delete> to
eliminate the default settings, then hit the final <OK>.

Check the Print Preview to make sure all is to your liking.
Don't forget, that you can now adjust the placement of the page numbers to
some extant by adding spaces to the front of the section.
