Excel opening *.doc & *.txt files

I'm stumped, I've installed WinXP PRO SP1 and Office XP PRO SP3 when I
try to open a *.txt or *.doc file (by double clicking in file
explorer) Excel opens up and gives me the error that the file is in
the wrong format. I've right clicked the files chosen "open with"
"choose program" chosen Word and checked the "always use" but it
eventually defaults back to attempting to open with Excel. Now that I
think about it when I open Word and do a file open it says all of my
*.doc files are in the wrong format and refuses to open *.doc files
created at work on Office XP. I've done the Detect and Repair setting
everything to the default but still have problems. Is there a way to
see the master association db of file extensions to see if these are
set correctly?

Go to Start>Settings>Folder>Options>File Types. Scroll down to MS Excel
Worksheet. Then if running Win98 OS Edit> select "Open" and Edit.

If using WinXP OS you would scroll down to .XLS then "Advanced">Open>Edit.

In Command line the path should be similar to this....

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT OFFICE\OFFICE\EXCEL.EXE" /e (delete the <sp>/e if
you want Book1 to open.

You must have the double quotes.

Below have "use DDE" checked and this in the DDE message box....[open("%1")]

Application should read "Excel"(no quotes)

Check also for .TXT and .DOC to see what the command lines read. Point them
to the appropriate Application by browsing for Winword.exe and Notepad.exe

Sorry for the cross post, but I'm having a problem which may fit one
or both NGs.

Gord,
Thanks for the response I have WinXP PRO SP1 and Office XP PRO SP3.
Had to go to Start\All Programs\Accessories\Windows
Explorer\Tools\Folder Options\File Types and looked at both DOC & TXT
extensions both are set alright. I figure the double XP (OS & Office)
is buggy I now get an Outlook failure to start and have had to
re-dtect and repair. I'm thinking that I will repost this onto the XP
OS NG as either that is the problem or Office is the problem.
