Excel open/save problem

I am using Excel 2003, with a spreadsheet template that was created with
Excel 97 is just "save as" with a new file name. I am receiving repair
message "repair01836_01.txt" t he file is damaged so extensively that is
unusable. If I try to save from my last file, Excel encounters errors and
restarts. Any suggestions? Thank you for your help.
