when i click on an ecel file icon, the file is opened by excel. when i click
on another excel icon, that file too is opened in excel but in the same
instance as the first one. how can i set things up so that clicking on an
excel icon opens the file in its own window (instance of excel) ?

Tools - Options - View tab - Windows in Taskbar. They're really one instance of Excel --
You'll see them in Window (Menu Bar) of any workbook window.

If that don't get it none, tell which version of Excel you're using.

i am using version 2003. i uncheck windows in taksbar and still multiple
documents appear in the same excel window. this did not happen withprior
version of excel. each document was in its own window.

If you truly want a new instance of Excel for every open workbook, go to
Tools>Options>General and checkmark "Ignore Other Applications".

You may change your mind when you start to bog down due to too many resorces
being wasted.

thanks. multiple excel windows do appear but they are empty - they do not
have the contents of the file on whose icon i clicked.

what next ?
