Different Instances of Excel

My excel nows opens in different windows. Previously if I had excel open and
clicked another .xls (or .xlsm) file in explorer it would open that file in
the excel window already open. Similarly if I opened an .xls attachment in a
email directly from outlook it would open the files in the existing window.

Now, for some reason, it creates a new instance of excel, a new window.

How can I get back to the original behaviour?

Tools > Options > View

Uncheck Windows in Taskbar

Hi John

Thank you for your quick response - but windows in taskbar is already
unchecked. My problem is not that each window is shown separately on the
taskbar but everytime I open a new workbook from explorer or outlook a whole
new instance of excel starts up.

Tools>Options>General.......uncheck "ignore other applications".
