Excel Graph linked into Powerpoint

I have a graph in Excel that I have pasted / linked (Edit--Paste Special--
using Paste Link) into powerpoint, all ok and it updates.

Both files are in the same directory.

If I copy both files to a new directory powerpoint still has the link but
won't update it - I get an error "The linked file was unavailable".

If I was doing this from Excel to Word then no problem.

any ideas?

You have to update the link of the excel file. Right now its looking at the
old path. try re-inserting it.

re-inserting it would fix the problem but I would have to do it everytime it
moves folder. Don't have to do it with Excel or Word.

Another problem I am having, is if the ppt is linking to Fred.xls and I copy
an ew version of fred.xls into the directory and replace the original one and
then open the ppt the links don't work. This is really strange since the
fred.xls is exacly the same but with new data.

I've got an idea you might want to look into:

There's a windows service called Distributed Link Tracking that's supposed to
somehow keep track of links, even when files move.

Sometimes you don't WANT it to track links, you want it just to use the new
version of the file wherever it may be. Or whatever.

Might be worth stopping this service temporarily as a test.
To try this:
Click Start, Run
In the box that opens, type
services.msc
Click OK
In the app that opens, you can locate and stop the link tracking service.

Turn the service back on again the same way
