excel freezes using network share

I have a network share that the secrataries use. When they
attempt to open an excel workbook, excel will not open the
workbook. If I open excel first then the workbook it will
open the workbook. I'm running excel 2002. This does not
happen with any of the other office products. if I restart
the PC, it works fine.
