Excel document opened from a link in Explorer

These documents open into an Explorer window, excel toolbars and menus are
not available. I can save the document and reopen, but would much rather
have it open up in excel in the first place.

Is there a setting in IE that would force word and excel documents to open
in the correct program? Or failing that, maybe a piece of code that could be
put on the intranet page?
