Excel crashes when embedding a file

Using Office Xp (Excel 2002) all updates loaded
on Windows Xp - all updates loaded

Create a simple list of names in Excel and save it as
a .XLS file
Open new spreadsheet and in a cell
Insert / Object / From File - pick the above file
Click Display as Icon

very rapidly Icon apperas oversize
icon shrinls to cell size
excel closes down - no error message
no error in event viewer (applications) [Windows XP]

Works OK in Office X on MAC 10.2.6
Fails on various Office installations on various Windows
OS

Using Insert as Link works OK

Anyone got any clues?
