EXCEL CALCULATIONS

I am trying to perform a simple calculation: =j56-k56
I cannot get any formulas to calculate, only show the actual formula itself
I have checked that these cells are formatted as numbers
This seems to happen on any cell I try in the worksheet

I take it you have values in cells J56 and K56? If you type in =j56-k56, it
should change to =J56-K56, and give a total. Else try the insert formula
icon, and type in your formula that way. If you still have no joy, your
cells may be formatted as text?

Is this just in one book or all? If it's just one, select an empty cell and
copy it. Highlight the remaining empty cells and select Edit>paste
special...>Values and add. Now try entering the formula

Either you have Excel set to display formulas (Tools / Options / View /
Formulas), or your cells are formatted as text.
