Excel 2007 - Starts in preview mode

When I start my Excel 2007, it starts in a blank preview mode (whether
clicking on the Excel Program or an Excel Spreadsheet). The window title I
get is "Preview: Page 1920010 of 1920011". There are no menu controls and I
cannot exit this mode. In fact, I can't do anything with Excel. Is there
anyway to get back to the default openning (new spreadsheet with blank
cells)? I have tried the repair option in the Office setup.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi,

I have never heard of this problem but here are some ideas:

1. Open Excel while holding down the Shift key.
2. Since you can not do ANYTHING in Excel, it's hard to give you any
solutions. One thing I would have tried was changing the default startup
view under Excel Options.
3. You might locate the XLSTART folder on your C: drive and delete any
files that are in that location.
4. If Excel has always had this problem since you got it I would guess you
have an illegal version of Excel.

Hi Shane,

Thanks for your help, but unfortunately, none of your suggestions worked. I
additionally tried a virus scan and completely uninstalling Excel and
reinstalling.

I did consult another source and they told me that one of the recent excel
updates through Windows Update may be the problem. I checked the latest
updates and uninstalled KB934670. Once uninstalled, Excel starting
functioning normally again.

Thanks again!

This a real problem. This is happening with me many times. It's not a rule,
it's intermittent. Please, support people, have someone to research this for
users like me and Adam - This problem REALLY disturbs our jobs.

Thanks

Try this: right click on the file name (don't double left click). From the
new dialogue box select "Open With." Select Excel and it should open.

Thanks for the reply. I tried that once, but it did not work either. Seems to
be something more complicate.

If you only have XL2007 installed, try moving personal.xls and excel??.xlb
where the ?? is the version number of previous installations. Then disable
any add-ins, via Office Button>Excel Options>Add-ins and click the go button
and un-check them all.

Also look at disabling/unloading things like adobe acrobat. A lot of the se
things above can cause this, if it goes away, try placing them back one at a
time. The *.xlb file may be hidden so you will need to enable visibility of
hidden files through folder options.

Thanks for the reply. I'm afraid it didn't work either. I could not find the
personal.xls and I removed the excel??.xlb and had already unchecked any
add-ins. Adobe is not being used too.

Thanks
