Excel 2007 Files grow larger and larger

I have several spreadsheets that for some reason are growing to over 200 megs
in size and this is in the new excel 2007 format. The spreadsheet is only 53
by 70 columns and shoud be only about 200 k.
What I found is that for some reason is adding data for the full length of
the column and I have to delete out any blank rows or columns to reduce the
size of the file.

Any ideas on why this is happening

That has always been an issue. If you have, or have had data that covers
huge areas, even if you have 'deleted' it the UsedRange in Excel does not
reset itself.

To do this check here

I cannot think of a situation where any comparable *.xlsx would not be
*considerably* smaller than an *.xls as it is effectively a *.zip file.

Of course, how much a poorly maintained file can grow is exacerbated by the
large grid. (Excel thinking it has 1,000,000 rows in use, rather than 65536)
