Excel 2007 dropping cell formats

We have been getting this issue a lot recently. A user saves the file and
when they open it again various cell formats have been removed. Many of
these files have been in use for years and worked consistantly. Often the
number of cell styles in the sheets can balloon into the tens of thousands
also. This problem seems to be spreading!

Did you try:
rebuilding by copy and pasting just the formulas and recreating the
formatting manually?
saving in open office?
removing all the styles including built in ones?
opening in 2003 to see if problem persists (changing format if required)?
What process are these workbooks being subjected to?
are users copy pasting from some horribly corrupt bag of hammers?

did you try getting someone in for a few weeks during the ski season?

Cheers

As you know Simon we have tried all sorts - What we have found is that Excel
is rubbish with styles and it's causing us a lot of problems!

What we are finding is that if you have 2 copies of Excel open and cut and
paste between the two that Excel is pushing any styles created in the
Instance 1 of Excel into Instance 2. Eventually the limit gets hit and Excel
loses loads of formatting. We have users who have 60,000 styles in their
workbooks which they were unaware of.

They are looking for another Excel person - If you fancy a bit of skiing why
not give them a shout!
