Excel 2002 creates tmp file on network share

Hello all,

I'm working with someone with a very odd issue. I think I've got the
conditions down that cause the problem, but not a resolution. Here goes:

He has a computer running Windows XP using Excel 2002 SP-2. When he opens,
modifies, and saves an .xls file on a network drive that is on a Windows
2000 Server, it creates another file in the following format: <file
name>~RF<6 or 7 character hexidecimal value>.tmp

As an example the original file name is work_2004.xls ... a file called
work_2004.xls~RF8e253d.TMP is created.

If he does the same thing on a WinNT 4.0 Server there is no problem.

He works in a corporate environment with mixed domains {AD and WinNT 4}. His
NT Domain account is one of the Legacy WinNT 4.0 Domains. {I'm not sure if
that matters}.

I've checked for viruses, odd processes / services {like spyware, or
trojans}, system messages in the event logs, but I can't find anything out
of the ordinary.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I'm using xl2002 on win98, so take this with a grain of salt.

I've never seen xl create this kind of temporary file. Is there any chance that
you have an antivirus software program running that's doing this? Or maybe some
type of "goBack" windows utility that's doing it.

I've seen a few posts that describe the same kind of thing (not sure about the
versions of windows/excel, though). And I don't think I've seen a reply saying
"that was it" or even "nope--not antivirus."

If you find the answer, please post back so google will know!
