Everything's been deleted from my desktop while using FrontPage 20

I need help to recover my documents and applications (I saved everything on
my desktop). I was publishing a temporary index page and after deleteng it.
I've realized that on the bottom left corner name of documents and folders
and applications are showing up and realized that FrontPage was on the way to
publish everything from my desktop. I pressed Stop button. Then I had the
option to delete those items. I thought it is not possible that it is asking
me for deleting for good. It could just ask me for deleting from the list of
publishing items.
What had happened that everything was deleted from my desktop.
Morover they are not in the bin.
I do not where they are.
And yes I did not make any back up copy.
Thanks.

Time to reinstall your Operating System, or rebuild your Desktop, Vanilla.
The stuff you deleted using FrontPage is gone for good.

When you delete files with FP, they are gone, FP doesn't use the Recycle bin! If you have deleted
your desktop, you will either have to run a System Restore, restore from back-up or re-install your
OS and all apps.

Thanks for the answers guys. I'm still hoping that there is some hope as I
had so much work saved on my desktop. FrontPage was not the biggest loss,
I've lost my Excel folder which is really hard on me.
It is unbeleavable to loose so much so easy.
( bang my head to the wall, for not making any backup copy.)
Thanks again.

Well..... if you have text documents that are important, stop work RIGHT
NOW. On another computer, do a search for a "Hex Editor." The files
are not purged, but what happens is that the space they are in is now
marked as "available" by the operating sytem. That means, the data is
still there until it's overwritten (which is why I said "stop using your
computer"). A hex editor can get "into" those spaces and recover text
that hasn't been overwritten.

You *may* be able to recover parts of your text documents, but they will
need to be reformatted in whatever word processing program you use.

Other programs and other data, other than text, will not be restorable.
I don't envy you. But I've been there.

Hi Vanilla,

Did I say it was funny?

And in this, case, no, there is not always a way. There *was* a way, but you
didn't take it. That's what backups are for.

You are right. The worst part is that I always postponed backing up my
documents, because I had no time. How silly does it sound now?
It is not an excuse for me that I did not know that one day my FrontPage
will act like a terminator and finish up all my hard work.
I also wonder what had happened. Why and how it could everything on my
desktop end up to be published.
If I forgot to thank anybody for answering my question I do thank them now.

Sounds like you turned your Desktop into a website, or you were working with
loose webpages.

Maybe?

Well, Vanilla, we have all done things like this, especially us programmers!
That's how you learn. I too have wondered why FrontPage doesn't use the
Recycle bin. I suspect it's because people might restore their stuff and
expect it to work, which it wouldn't quite often, because of the server
extensions.

You can't recycle across domains.
( but you probably already know that )

To add to the mysteries of computer world--I was able to recover part of my
missing documents. (more details are in my other accidentally published
thread—my apology) using restore point. I’ve got back my documents (I saved
them on my desktop) except Excel & those that were without folders (???).
The funny thing is that I’ve got back my FrontPage documents. I would’ve
expected FrontPage to delete those.
I think FrontPage could give an extra warning when it is about deleting
documents for good. This warning could be different style and colour that it
catches people attention.

I can see how System Restore would work, since the documents were on your
Desktop, and the Desktop is one of the things that gets backed up by System
Restore. Wish I'd thought of it! Anyway, glad you're back in bizniz, and
Merry Christmas!
