Everything grayed out in letters and mailings sub-menu, Why???

I thought this might a hardware problem, but I've uninstalled/re-installed my
HP 1020 to no effect--any suggestions?
 
You make no mention of which version of Word or Windows, so this is just a
guess, but do you have a document open? If not, that's the problem.
