Spell Check

I'm using MS Word Office 2007) on a Dell Inspiron running XP. Spell check in
Word has worked perfectly for the last year then just stopped showing
misspelled word in red. The word flashes red then goes back to black. All
"ignore" options are grayed out so I'm unable to ignore the word. This is the
case for ALL documents, new and old ones. Suggestions appear but are grayed
out so I can't select them. The dictionary (Tools>Options>Spelling &
Grammar>Custom Dictionary) is CUSTOM.DIC.
I have uninstalled Office, restarted and reinstalled. No effect.
I have run sfc /scannow only to find that all installed programs have their
necessary components.
Any idea what the problem is and how I can fix it?
