Every new device i plug in come up as 'unknown device'

I installed the driver for my logitech G11 keyboard, and ever since its
seemed to have broken the windows driver cache or whatever.

Basically if i move my keyboard to another usb slot it comes up as unknown
device, if i plug in new hardware, or move slots on any of the usb ports, it
all shows up as unknown devices. Not only that but even if i get the driver
manually for the hardware, vista ignores my suggestion for that device and
suggests that no driver was found.

Yeah something killed the driver table, anyone know how to rebuild it?
repair it? its pretty important..

I'm having a similar problem, Vista continually asks me for the driver for my
Saitek "Eclipse" keyboard (which requires nothing more than a generic driver)
and for my USB hub from Iconcepts (usb 2.0 x1 and usb 1 x4) is there a
software patch out there to tell Vista which drivers to ignore conflicts on?
I solved most of the rest of Vista's issue by buying Version Tracker Pro
(good for updating and scanning drivers). The biggest problem with Vista is
that it keeps asking or disables the device if you tell it not to ask.

See this thread. It's long but look for the posts about deleting the
Infcache.1 file in C:\Windows\Inf. You might want to make a copy of it
first, before deleting it. There is a post by Darrell Gorter from MS saying
there could be other problematic effects from doing this, but he never got
back to the thread about what those potential problems are. I do know from
many posts in the newsgroups that this has been a solution for many with
this problem. I haven't seen any posts indicating problems with it other
than Darrell's.

The driver cache is C:\windows\inf\INFCACHE.1 so you might try deleting
it. Your error is not quite the same as the usual 'driver not found'
error, but it won't do any harm to delete it anyway.

You might also try backing out the logitech G11 driver that caused the
problem to begin with. Is that driver known to be Vista compatible?

I dont believe that the driver is specifically vista compatible, but on the
site it says for win xp/vista.

Thanks for the help with the inf1, what i ended up doing a momment ago was
backing up my entire inf directory and copying my housemates into its
location.

since then everything has been fine. sounds like it would have had a similar
result as removing that file
