Every document prompts to save

User has Word 2002. He reports that about 80% of the time when he does
nothing more than open a document, he receives a prompt asking if he wants
to save it, even if nothing changed in the document. I've looked at his
setting and do not see anything that would seem to apply to this. What
might be causing this unwelcome prompt? TIA!

Hi Brenda,

Do the documents contain field codes (alt+F9 to toggle)
such as 'current date' that will update when the document
is opened? That can be a common source of the file being
'changed' in Word's view.

I had him check and no, Field Codes was not checked. His documents
generally are straight text in an outline/numbering format.

It isn't a question of Field Codes being checked, but rather existing in
the document. Have him do Alt-F9 and look at the document carefully. Any
field codes will show up.
