the events in my 2000 server stopped logging. I checked
the service and verified that it was running. Also, I
searched for event.dll files and they were found in the
system32 folder and the cache. What can I do to resolve
this issue??

Do you have filters turned on ??

Click View | All Records.

The temporary fix;
You might try changing the file properties to "Overwrite as needed"

Else; Control Panel|Administrative Tools|Services|Event Log Service|General,
set the "Startup Type:" to "Disabled" restart the pc, then delete (or move)
the corrupt *.evt file(s) from %windir%\system32\config then set the Event
Log Service "Startup Type:" back to "Automatic", restart for effect.

The more permanent fix;

I just had the same or a similar issue with one of my servers. The logs all
looked empty. I right clicked on the log window and chose refresh and they
came back, but I couldn't open any of them. Turns out the mmc console file I
use was corrupted. (I open perfmon then add computer management and other
stuff so all is on one console then save the config to the desktop.)

I created a new mmc console and saved the config and now all is working
again.

Interesting when I refresh it works and I can view them
again, but not all the time. I am viewing the events
through computer managment. When I refresh applications
for example I can view them but if I close the window,
reopen, and view there is nothing there again, but if I
refresh....bam events, all but the system works that
way????

Hi Steve,

You can apply the hotfix of

829246 Event Logs Are Corrupted
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=829246

I wanted to let you know that hotfixes are generally available for specific
issues in the Product. Please keep in mind that they are not fully
regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing the
specific problem. For this reason, the first step would be to verify if you
are indeed running into the problem addressed in a specific hotfix. The
individual sending of hotfixes must be tracked by Microsoft for reasons
such as: you may run into problems after installing the fix, when future
updates to the hotfix occur we want to be able to notify you. For these
reasons and others, many hotfixes are only available to customers if they
call into the appropriate Microsoft Support phone line, and receive direct
help and advice from a Microsoft support professional. We are not equipped
to send out and track hotfixes here in the Newsgroups forum.

If you prefer, you could contact Microsoft Product Support Services
directly to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product
Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit
the following Microsoft Web site:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;CNTACTMS

NOTE: In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support
calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a
specific update will resolve your problem. The typical support costs will
apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for
the specific update in question.
