Event Viewer Problems

Hi,

I have just updated my XP home edition to include SP2 and I'm in the process
of solving some minor problems. I need to check my event logs but everytime I
open event viewer and click on either of the three groups
"Application/Security/System" I get this message: ""Unable to complete the
operation on "Application". The interface is unknown."" This happens for
either of the three groups. I then checked to making sure Event viewer had
startet in the Services folder. I found that it was set to automatic but had
NOT startet. Clicking on start it gives me this error message: "Could not
start the Event Log Service on Local Computer. Error 1501: No event log file
could be opened, so the event logging service did not start."

And this is where I'm stuck now.....what to do next???

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

BTW: The other problem I'm trying to solve is that the Security Center and
the Firewall are failing to start. Don't know if they have anything to do
with each other.

The files may be corrupt. Control Panel|Services|Event Log Service|General,
set the "Startup Type:" to "Disabled" restart the pc, then delete (or move)
the corrupt SysEvent.Evt, SecEvent.Evt, AppEvent.Evt from
%systemroot%\system32\config then set the Event Log Service "Startup Type:"
back to "Automatic", restart for effect.

Hi Dave,

I can't begin to tell you how glad I am right now. I Followed your
directions and everything came to life -- and not only my Event Viewer but
suddenly the Security Center and the Firewall also worked. Though, the
event log still shows some issues this is a big step in the right direction
for me. I want to thank you very much for your help. Have a nice day.
