event viewer comes back empty

if i launch event viewer, it has many items (syslog)

if I click over to the app.log. it's empty (I used to have stuff here,
from MS SQL, and Vertias, etc).

if I clck back on System Log the right pane is now empty (!!)

If I close and restart event viewer, I can see the event log for the
system log again, but the same symptoms persist.

recently upgraded to SP4 any ideas?
 
Seems my application log file was full.... and it was mucking things up.
