event viewer and task scheduler unavailable

No information is shown when I try to access application, system, or security
logs in event viewer. Clicking on the category generates error message
"Unable to complete the operation on 'Application.' The interface is
unknown." Event Viewer is not listed in Services in MMC and I need
assistance in determining how to add it back to the console.

Trying to start the scheduler results in error: "Could not start the Task
Scheduler service on Local Computer. Error 1717: The interface is unknown."
Task Scheduler is listed in MMC services, status is stopped, and I cannot
start it.

Both issues appear (to me) to be related to some sort of OS corruption, from
what I've found in web searches, but I'm unable to determine the steps to
take to fix either.

WinXP SP2, all current updates installed. Last major system changes were
removal of Avast! antivirus, and installation of Office 2003 and McAfee
Security center. Thanks for any suggestions.

Does the key exist?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog

Yes, the key is there. Top level headings listed as follows:
Under Eventlog: Name (Default), Type REG-SZ, Data (value not set).
Under Application: Name (Default), Type REG-SZ, Data (mnmsrvc).
Under Security: Name (Default), Type REG-SZ, Data (value not set).
Under System: Name (Default), Type REG-SZ, Data (value not set).

If that's all there is you're missing the rest of the service structure. You
can try copying from another like machine (regedit export/import) or
possibly try a repair installation.
