Are you using NOD32 anti-virus per chance?

<quote by another user>

I found the culprit I believe. It was NOD32 beta 2.7. After I reformatted I
installed NOD32 2.7 which is compatable with Vista. After installing and
restarting I checked task scheduler and I would not work again like before.
I uninstalled NOD32 and now it is working porperly like it should. Oviously
something wrong with the NOD32 integrated scheduler. Anyone else
experiencing this problem?

Meanwhile, try this:

1. Click Start, Run. Type REGEDIT.EXE and press ENTER

2. Go to the following branch:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Schedule

3. From the File menu, choose Export and save the branch to a .REG file.

4. Under the "Schedule" branch, right-click "Security" and choose Delete

5. Click Yes to confirm key deletion.

6. Exit the Registry Editor and restart Windows.

When I attemp to start the task scheduler from the Computer Management
window, I receive this message:  "Could not start the Task Scheduler

problem.

Long shot:

The XP Event Log service needs to be running. Of course it already
is! Please check anyway.

In the c:\windows folder is the scheduled tasks log file:
schedlgu.txt

It contains info when TS starts, stops, runs, successes, failures,
etc. It can only be deleted when the service is not running, so look
in the log by date/time, or rename/delete it to get a clean log with
just your troubleshooting. It is hard to read when it is all
cluttered up and you are troubleshooting.

The error 5 is a permissions error. Can you create and save a new
file in the c:\windows folder? TS will want to create/write to the
log file, so if you can't do it, TS probably can't either.

Also check for related events in the System Event Log (Start, Run,
eventvwr.msc) after trying to start TS. Starting and stopping are TS
events that will show up there, so maybe there are more clues. Just
look at the recent messages surrounding your efforts.

I checked both log files and didn't see any indication of why access would be
denied. The Scheduler log just contained the error 5 message with no
indication of why access is denied. Could this be related to some security
package? Thanks..

What edition of XP are you running? Home? Professional? Media Center?
What Service Pack level? SP1a, SP2, SP3?
(hold Windows logo key and press Pause/Break for System Properties.)

Are you logged on with an account that has administrative privileges?

When you open Control Panel> Scheduled Tasks
Are there any items besides "Add Scheduled Tasks"?

If you double-click that item, does Scheduled Task Wizard appear?

Some excerpts from Scheduler HELP topics:

[begin quote:]
You must enter a user name in the Scheduled Task Wizard before you can
finish scheduling a task.
If you do not enter a password, an error appears at the end of the wizard
telling you that the task might not run. If you leave the password blank and
you want the task to run when you are logged on, open the task. On the Task
tab, select the Run only if logged on check box. The task will run at its
scheduled time when the user who created the task is logged on to the
computer.

In Windows XP, tasks are scheduled and performed based on standard Windows
XP security permissions.

Resetting passwords
In Windows XP, passwords have an expiration date. If you are scheduling
recurring tasks that you want to run indefinitely, you need to be aware of
the expiration date on your passwords. When your computer password expires
you will need to reset the password for your scheduled tasks.
[:end quote]

HTH. (Hope This Helps :)

Hi Jose,

I think you are on the right track with the permissions error idea. I just
experimented with Scheduling a task, and set Calc.exe to run about 3 minutes
after the then current time, but did NOT enter a password in the wizard. I
got this message after clicking Finish:

/!\ The new task has been created, but may not run because the account
information could not be set.
The specific error is:
0x80070005: Access is denied.
try using the Task page Browse button to locate the application.
- - -

Calculator did not open at the appointed time. I then tried re-scheduling it
a few minutes later, and after clicking OK, got this:

/!\ An error has occurred while attempting to set task account information.
The specific error is:
0x80070005: Access is denied.
You do not have permission to perform the requested operation.
- - -

There was nothing in Event Viewer. Schedlgu.txt had the following:

"Task Scheduler Service"
Started at 8/10/2009 7:12:33 PM
"Calculator.job" (calc.exe) 8/11/2009 12:30:00 AM ** ERROR **
The attempt to retrieve account information for the specified task failed;
therefore, the task did not run. Either an error occurred, or no account
information existed for the task.
The specific error is:
0x8004130f: No account information could be found in the Task Scheduler
security database for the task indicated.
"Calculator.job" (calc.exe) 8/11/2009 12:35:00 AM ** ERROR **
The attempt to retrieve account information for the specified task failed;
therefore, the task did not run. Either an error occurred, or no account
information existed for the task.
The specific error is:
0x8004130f: No account information could be found in the Task Scheduler
security database for the task indicated.
[ ***** Most recent entry is above this line ***** ]
- - -

The first time is when I restarted my computer after a thunderstorm passed.
The 2nd time was the first scheduled time, and the 3rd was the 2nd attempt.
(I deleted the task later.) I'm guessing the "no account information" error
refers to the fact that there was no password included.

I don't know if any of that is connected with the OP's (Original Poster's)
problem, which from the description seems to be accessing Scheduler in the
first place. Note that I did not get an Error 5, but error 0x80070005,
which is apparently a permissions error. See my other message to the OP for
other info. BTW: I'm using XP-pro-SP3 and was logged on with an account with
administrative privileges while trying the above things.

Another puzzling thing is that the OP was trying to "start the task
scheduler from the Computer Management window". I checked my Computer
Management console and don't seem to have any scheduler there. I accessed
mine from Control Panel> Scheduled Tasks. I hope these things shed some
light on something or other.

FWIW. --Richard

Your messages are exactly what you see when you try to add the new
task and specify an account that does not have a PW.

A designated Administrator account will not work without a PW (I am
and can't)

The Administrator account (with no PW) will not work.

If you login as Administrator (with no PW) it will not work.

The task gets created with errors and it will never run and you see
the stuff in the schedlgu.txt file. It is working perfectly!

There are ways to make it work.

You can create a new account with a PW just for STs.
You can add a PW to the specified account used to create the task.
You can "cheat" in several ways.

Some cheating methods are just to screwed up for me and I want the
easy way, no polices (works if you don't have a security issue), "at"
commands (never a big fan or even tried it). They may work, but they
are not as simple as they could be. I cheat a different way and leave
all that stuff alone.

Believe me, I have done the research. I can get your ST set up with
no password without touching any of that stuff which is okay for me,
but may not be okay for you.

The OP seems to not be able to get the Service running which is most
peculiar and I can't reproduce it even on purpose. Even a thorough
ganging up on the problem did not seem to help! He is "it".

I think we are missing some piece of information with that situation.
