Event ID: 258 Source: TermService Description: STATUS_TIMEOUT

I have received the following error on a Windows 2000 Server
Version 5.0 (Build 2195) Service Pack 4

Event ID: 258
Source: TermService
Description: STATUS_TIMEOUT

I was unable to find any information in the MS Knowledgebase re tis message
so I called Microsoft and according to the technition this issue relates to
the Uninterruptable Power Supply service. That's all I could get from the
technician. Apparently the article was found in their internal database but
I couldn't get a copy of it and there was no resolution suggested.

Has anyone experienced this issue and found a resolution. This error has
occured a couple of times only and requires that the server be restarted to
restart the Terminal Services service. If anyone knows how this is related
to the UPS service which is disabled on my server I'd appreciate any feedback.

Thanks

Giulio

As (nearly) always, EventID.net gives the solution:

http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=258&eventno=1492
&source=TermService&phase=1

which lists this KB article and post-SP4 hotfix:

324446 - Terminal Server and connected Terminal Services clients
pause when a Terminal Services client logs on or logs off
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=324446

After installing the hotfix, you have to turn on the Power Protect
write cache option on your hard disks.

Hi Vera,

Thank you for the information. EventID.Net was the only place that had
anything on this error. Not even MS Knowledgebase has anything on the error
message.

I have two servers where this problem is occuring. I have applied the
Hotfix as suggested on both servers but have only enabled the Power Protect
write cache option on one of the servers.

Both servers are still experiencing the same error after the above mentioned
updates. The servers are OK for a day or so but eventually the error occurs.
Usually once the Status_Timeout error occurs it is followed by an Event ID:
1004 Source: TermService Description: The Terminal server cannot issue a
client license.
I haven't been able to see a pattern to the error occuring and I have run
out of ideas on trying to decipher the issue. I am at the point where I will
arrange to rebuild the servers, unless you have any other suggestions.

Thanks

Giulio

Difficult situation, Giulio.
I'm afraid that if you rebuild your servers, you might find yourself
facing the exact same problem again.

Before you rebuild, I would implement the solution from KB article
324446 completely. That involves all 3 steps:
1. install the hotfix
2. configure the Power Protect option
3. configure the registry on the Terminal server and on all file
servers

Note the *on all file servers* in the last step!

Since the problem described in KB 324446 has to do with a contention
among server resources, I don't think that you can expect a any
result if you only implement half of the solution

Similar registry changes are listed in a couple of other KB articles
about file access delays and timeouts, and I think it's important
that you implement them on both the client and the server (in terms
of file transfer, which means the Terminal Server and the File Server
in your situation). Example: KB 888562.

On the other hand, there is no real confirmation (other than
EventId.net) that your problem is really solved by applying KB
324446.

Whatever you do, make sure you have a full backup!
Good luck! and please let us know the results.
