ethernet on motherboard

installed new motherboard - nforce3
XP home
I'm trying to connect to the internet thru the lan on my motherboard.
Loaded drivers, control panel shows network adapter 'nvidia nforce network
controller".
When I check status of the network connection it says its connected, but
explorer (version that came with xp) doesn't connect.
I am using a USB hub now to connect, so I know cables, router etc. are all
working.

Try a loopback test on the LAN connection on the motherboard - you may have
a defective NIC (even though it's new).

If the loopback works, make sure your patch cables are working OK (hopefully
you have a tester or you can try a cable from another machine that you know
works).
