I'm getting notification of an "essential" update: Internet Explorer 8.
Does this mean that from now on using Internet Explorer 7 is insecure?

No. It means that Microsoft wants you to think that IE8 is the next best
thing since sliced bread.

IE7 is still good to use and it's as secure (or not) depending on your
machine.

No. Not at all. If you are happy with IE7, there is no need to
upgrade.

IE8 has stability problems on my Vista machine, but is fine on my XP
machine. I will hold off installing it again for 6mo to a year.

I was wary for something like that... But then, why would they qualify the
update as category "essential"?
Anyway, I experience no problems with version 7.

It's an essential part of their business strategy. It's not essential
for you.

Well IE8 is more secure, its faster and its more feature-rich. If you don't
like it you can always uninstall it and go back to IE7.

Just one ignorant question, please:
Am I assuming correctly that IE 8 can be installed on top of IE 7?
Thanks, Harry.

Yes the IE8 installer will replace IE7, or IE6. And if you were to
uninstall it it would reinstall IE6 or 7 for you.
