Errors installing Window Components

D

Dale Sampson

Background: Windows XP-Pro sp2 system with failing system disk. I was able
to do a complete backup of the disk (both windows backup and Veritas/Stomp
backup mypc). Replaced the disk, reinstalled XP-sp1 from my msdn cd and then
restored the disk & system state with ms backup. This didn't work at all.
The system blue screened and the rebooted. An attempt to repair also failed.
I reinstalled again and this time used stomp backup to restore. This still
got fatal error at restart, however, doing a repair did work well enough to
get the system running. During install, I got a bunch of errors, "Cant copy
file" saying it could not read the source. I then reinstalled SP2 hoping
that would correct the missing files. sp2 seemed to install ok.

The system ran albeit with a number of problems among which was IIS no long
worked. I used add/remove windows components to uninstall and then attempted
to reinstall after reboot. I get the same 'cant copy file' errors. I copied
the cd install folders to a HD and tried again pointing to the hd folder for
the files when the error occured. The can't copy file error still occurs.
I tried to manually copy several of the files ID'ed in the error boxes and
had no problem copying from either the cd or the hd folder so the files seem
to be ok. The system disk is FAT32 so permissions shouldn't be an issue.

I've looked through the logs & event viewer and am at a loss what this is
about.

Any suggestions as to what I can look at to try and get a handle on this?

Thanks,
Dale

Thank Wesley,

I guess I wasn't clear. The applet launches, I can select/deselect
components.
The can't find file errors occur during the copy file phase of the component

Look in the Event Viewer for the errors.

Event ID & the Event Source are very important.

To open the Event Viewer...
Start | Run | Type: eventvwr | OK

For any Events that seem related to the problem...

Double click the event in Event Viewer | Click: the button below the second
arrow (looks like two pages) [[Copies the details of the event to the
Clipboard.]] | Paste into Notepad | Click:
For more information, see Help and Support Center at

Wesley,

There are no events generate during the failed windows add components
process.
Setupapi log shows nothing that looks useful (to me). I see no errors (ie,
fail: messages in iis log). Again, the files ARE in the expected folder .
Pointing setup to an alternate folder that has a copy of the file still give
the error. I'm logged on with admin privledges. The first file to fail is
staxmem.dll.

Below is an excert from the setup log. The returned error is: 0x000004b8 -
an extended error has occurred.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks,
Dale

Wes,

I had found that article too. Tried that - and still got the can't copy
errors.

Since it appeared all the files were already in \system32, I tried
installing again and just keep clicking Cancel/Ok to continue setup without
and after 25 or so setup finally proceeded and said it finished
successfully. IIS does seem to work.

Now if I could get FPE to work ... it appears to install successfully but
doesn't work. If I 'check extensions' it tells me the web at http: is
just fine. That's probably best addressed in another group though :~)

Appreciate all the help and suggestions.

Sorry - Front Page Extensions.

Strangely enough, I did get this working too through a totally unexpected
avenue. After spending hours going in circles, I found a FPE version 3
management tool (from the 1st version of front page I think). Anyway, I ran
it & it said no extensions were installed on my server. I clicked install -
got a message box that this version of FPE was too old to install, but it
could install the newest version available on my system. I clicked OK and
off it went. To my complete surprise, it actually did successfully install
FPE version 5 on my IIS webs. Go figure ...

Now my last screwy 'left over' from this abortion of a restore: windows
update doesn't work.
Udate KB says for this error, I needed to add BITS and WUAUSERV to the
services list. Did that. Bits works but wuauserv service will not run. If I
open services MMC and click Start - it tells me the Error 1083: the
executable this service is configured to run in does not implement the
service.
The executable is: C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs and the app ID
points to wuauwserv.dll. Based on the reg keys from a working XP system, it
looks correct. Obviously it isn't but I'll be %@#$% if I see what's wrong
.....

Wesley,

There are no events generate during the failed windows add

Setupapi log shows nothing that looks useful (to me). I see no

expected folder . Pointing setup to an alternate folder that has a
copy of the file still give the error. I'm logged on with admin

The system ran albeit with a number of problems among which was
IIS no long worked. I used add/remove windows components to
uninstall and then attempted to reinstall after reboot. I get
the same 'cant copy file' errors. I copied the cd install

Hey Wes,

Good suggestion - but no go. Still got the goofy error : the executable
this service is configured to run in does not implement the service.
(I again looked at the reg keys - as near as I could tell it was pointed to
the correct library. Don't know what I was missing.)

I did get it working, albeit the method was perhaps a little drastic :~)
I deleted ALL reg keys for wuauserv & rebooted. I then reinstalled the
service with au.inf & again rebooted.
Configured AU service with MMC > Services (no more error) & setup my A.U.
choices with the Security applet.
I manually went to windows update site so the current update 'scan' software
got reinstalled.
Next reboot it politely told me new updates were available.

Just FYI - I found an article that suggested reinstalling the update service
with this command :
%SystemRoot%\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection AutoUpdate
132 %SystemRoot%\inf\au.inf

I'm not sure what it did but it didn't install the service.
However, simply right clicking au.inf & choosing Install (using
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 as file source) did copy the correct files
& added the reg entries.

I 'think' that gets everything working.

<Soap_Box>
I am still disappointed at how much of a PIA it is to restore a windows NT
based system from a backup. I really do feel this is a major security flaw.
In the past, my Seagate/Veritas/Stomp Backup MyPc (formerly Desktop Exec)
worked ok. I had to do a XP restore a while back (pre-service packs) and it
worked without a hitch. Why it was such a mess this time is not clear to me.
I think from now on, I'll just 'Ghost' my system disk. Having to spend this
much time on a restore is plain nuts.
</Soap_Box>

Again, I do appreciate all the suggestions.

Thanks,
Dale

A.U. choices with the Security applet.
I manually went to windows update site so the current update 'scan'
software got reinstalled.
Next reboot it politely told me new updates were available.

Just FYI - I found an article that suggested reinstalling the update
service with this command :
%SystemRoot%\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection
AutoUpdate 132 %SystemRoot%\inf\au.inf

I'm not sure what it did but it didn't install the service.
However, simply right clicking au.inf & choosing Install (using
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 as file source) did copy the correct
files & added the reg entries.

I 'think' that gets everything working.

<Soap_Box>
I am still disappointed at how much of a PIA it is to restore a
windows NT based system from a backup. I really do feel this is a
major security flaw. In the past, my Seagate/Veritas/Stomp Backup
MyPc (formerly Desktop Exec) worked ok. I had to do a XP restore a
while back (pre-service packs) and it worked without a hitch. Why it
was such a mess this time is not clear to me. I think from now on,
I'll just 'Ghost' my system disk. Having to spend this much time on a
restore is plain nuts. </Soap_Box>

Again, I do appreciate all the suggestions.

Thanks,
Dale

my server. I clicked install - got a message box that this version
of FPE was too old to install, but it could install the newest
version available on my system. I clicked OK and off it went. To my
complete surprise, it actually did successfully install FPE version
5 on my IIS webs. Go figure ...

Now my last screwy 'left over' from this abortion of a restore:
windows update doesn't work.
Udate KB says for this error, I needed to add BITS and WUAUSERV to
the services list. Did that. Bits works but wuauserv service will
not run. If I open services MMC and click Start - it tells me the
Error 1083: the executable this service is configured to run in

The executable is: C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs and
the app ID points to wuauwserv.dll. Based on the reg keys from a
working XP system, it looks correct. Obviously it isn't but I'll be

I had found that article too. Tried that - and still got the can't

Since it appeared all the files were already in \system32, I tried
installing again and just keep clicking Cancel/Ok to continue
setup without and after 25 or so setup finally proceeded and said
it finished successfully. IIS does seem to work.

Now if I could get FPE to work ... it appears to install

NTREGOPT [[Similar to Windows 9x/Me, the registry files in an NT-based

use the NTREGOPT utility regularly, but especially after installing

and optimize registry access.

The program works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch",
thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously
modified or deleted keys.

Note that the program does NOT change the contents of the registry in
any way, nor does it physically defrag the registry files on the drive
(as the PageDefrag program from SysInternals does). The optimization
done by NTREGOPT is simply compacting the registry hives to the
minimum size possible.]]

Hi

Substituting AutoUpdate with DefaultInstall would most likely have made
that command line to install the service (to a certain degree at least).

But to make the service operative after the command line above, you
often need to run the command "regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll". Actually,
running that command will restore the service's registry settings back
(if you for some reason have deleted them).

Hi Torgeir,

Thank you for the information! Looks like doing as you suggested is the same
command (pretty close anyway) executed when explorer 'Install' context menu
option is chosen.
