Errors Burning DVDs

I am aware that Windows's CD burner does not burn to DVDs, so I am forced to
use a 3rd party program. Having tried various types of DVDs, on different
speeds, it will consistently at some point come up with an error, usually
"Cannot write to DVD due to ..." or "During verify one or more of the files
did not match the refernce. Please retry". It never has errors burning CDs.

Info:
CD/DVD Drive: Lite-On DVD+RW
DVD disc types: Mueller DVD+R 8x
TDK DVD+R 4x
Program used to burn DVDs: Sonic RecordNow DX v4.6 & Simple Backup

Can someone please help with any (or all) of the following:
Where to download updates for these products (It was shocking trying to find
the place to download updates, then when I did, I was informed of an error.
Exact URLs please)
Is there an issue with the burner or the discs? (If so, please provide help
how to resolve the issue)
Or provide an alternative (preferably free) program that will record files
to DVDs and backup the system to DVDs.

Thank you for any help in advance. I can provide more information if
neccessary and I am fairly good with computers.

Unless there is a free version that allows burning to DVDs and system backup
to DVDs, no thanks.

Anyone else out there able to help me?

Every attempt I have made so far to update the product has failed. Using the
links from inside the program indicates something is wrong with my network
connection (if so, how am I posting on theses newsgroups then?)
Every attempt to look for it online led me to register tthe product. Then
upon every registration, I am informed of a service error 500 in which the
link could not be processed and the system administrators have been informed
and will resolve the error "shortly". Shortly? It's been a week now.

Sonic have appaling customer support - Nero and Norton Ghost are now looking
like they're worth the investment.

All help appreciated, thanks in advance.

Quite possibly your drive is defective. A good way to test whether a
problem is caused by hardware or software (Windows) is to boot with
Knoppix, a Linux distro that runs from cd. If you can't burn a DVD with
K3b (a Linux burning program included with Knoppix), then you know the
drive is no good. There is a free Windows burning program that will
burn a DVD which you could try, also. If that one fails, you might want
to test with Knoppix before replacing the drive. To get Knoppix, you
need a computer with a fast Internet connection and third-party burning
software. Download the Knoppix .iso and create your bootable cd.
