I recieved a error that states windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt windows <root>/system32/ntoskrnl.exe. please install a copy of the above file. I bought the computer from a private owner and did not get a back up cd, does this mean I will have to purchase Windows XP over again?

The disk should have come with the computer.

Try visiting the Windows Update site

Start, Help and Support, Keep your computer up to date etc.
