Error: windows cannot determine user or computer name

I am receiving the error: "windows cannot determine the
user or computer name" source: userenv event_id: 1000
user: nt authority/system. the mirosoft knowledge base
article 329708 suggests joining the computer to a
workgroup then rejoining it to the domain... the problem
is that the computer is a domain controller in a win2000
domain operatining in mixed mode and becase of it being a
dc it cannot be assigned a new network identity.

Any ideas or suggestions are much appreciated.

Hi,
do you have at least a second DC in your domain? Then you
can demote the first one, make it a workgroup member and
run dcpromo again.
