Error when Publishing site containing a ".pdf" file

Don

I've been using FrontPage to publish my website for some time. I've
just run into a problem when trying to publish it with a new ".pdf"
file on one of the pages. I created the ".pdf" using Acrobat 6.0
Professional, put the ".pdf" in the hard drive based web site where I
do all my development. However, when I "Publish" the site into
another hard drive directory I get the following error message:

"An Error occurred accessing your FrontPage web files. Authors - if
authoring against a web server, please contact the webmaster for this
server's site. Webmasters - please see the server's system log for
more details."

Any idea what's going on here? I'm at a total loss and would
appreciate some help.

Thanks,
Don

Is the .pdf in your FP web, and after you put it there w/ Acrobat, did you open the web in FP & run Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks for
FP to recognize it

Thanks for your reply Stefan. Yes the .pdf is in my FP web. Rather
than use the Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks, I resolved the link by
selecting the text in the page representing the hyperlink,
right-clicked on that selected text, then clicked on Hyperlink, then
via Browse selected the .pdf file. This worked for another .pdf which
I created via Acrobat 4.0 Distiller. The one I'm having trouble with
I created with Acrobat 6.0 Professional. Just one note, I noticed if
I put the .pdf in a folder outside my FP web that after resolving the
hyperlink as I stated above, that it worked. But, that won't work
when I publish the FP web, as FP won't pick up the .pdf (I don't
think). Any ideas?

Thanks for your help.

"please see the server's system log for more details."

You need to first ask your host to check the logs to see if it gives the
reason.

I'm not sure how that applies in this situation, as the target site is
another web site on the same hard drive as the web site on which I'm
doing the FP development.

If the logs you are referring to are the logs within Control
Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Systems
Tools/Performance Logs and Alerts, I've checked them and there is no
message logged.

Where do I find the event viewer and server logs? Remember, all of
this is occurring only on my hard drive.

Are you, by any chance, running FrontPage 2000 SR1 and
accessing a disk-based Web at a UNC location (i.e. at
\\servername\sharenaname\myweb)? If so, consult MSKB
article 261980:

FrontPage Can No Longer Open Webs from UNC After SR-1 Is
Applied
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-
US;261980

Otherwise, try recalculating hyperlinks in both Webs and
rebooting.

BTW, how large is this PDF file?

We have also seen this problem. Is your PDF file large-ish and are you
posting to a Unix-based web server?

In our experience, the size of the PDF file appeared to be causing a
problem with the upload process. Essentially, some component of the
Publish process believed that a timeout had occurred, meaning that it
thought that the upload process had stalled. This occurred when
publishing to a NetBSD web server (Unix) with FP2K extensions.

A work-around is to mark the PDF file as "Do Not Publish", Publish the
FP web site normally, and then use a conventional upload (FTP or Web
Folders) to post the PDF file.

Well, I found that it worked if I Published to my host server
directly, rather than Publishing to another web folder on my local
computer (which I have been doing for a long time). Here's the
message that the event posts in the Event Viewer:

"Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions:
Received empty response from Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions"

Given that there is reference to Server Extensions, I'm thinking for
some reason when FP is publishing the .pdf file it expects to find the
Server Extensions on that same server. Not sure why this should be an
issue with FP on a .pdf file. But, anyway, I've got it working.
Thank you to all of you for helping me out. This newsgroup is just
GREAT!

Same problem publishing to Win2k Pro OS. I tried all the guff outline
in MS's tech bulletins to no avail.

My workaround was to install Frontpage extensions (and by extensio
IIS) to my local system. I'm currently publishing the web to my loca
system - it's taking an age because of several large ftp downloads bu
at least it's now working again.

FYI - unless specified otherwise the web can be found in x:\inetpub
directory on your local syste
