I have a user with existing excel file that used to work. when we attempt to
open it we recieve the following error.
"filename.xls can not be accessed. The file may be Read Only, or you are
trying to access a read only location, or the server the document is stored
on may not be responding"
Well this is not the case, The server is fine, The file is not read only,
and location is now on a local workstation and full rights. We have tried
renaming the file and repairing the file sort of a tape restore. Microsoft
had acknowleged this type of problem but states it was corrected in Office
2003 SP1, which we are running. I have also noticed others posting on the net
with this same type of problem. has anyone found a solution?

Try this:
Open Excel then go to File, Open. Then browse to the file and select it.
Notice there is a drop-down arrow on the Open button, click on it and select
open and recover. Hope this helps.

Daniel,
I am building a statue to you in the lobby of my office. I lost a
spreadsheet that I had put so many hours into it was ridiculous. Plus, it
was for a really, really important project for senior management. Anyway, I
followed your instructions and GOT THE FILE BACK! Woo hoo! It just lost
some chart data link. Big deal. Losing the file had me devastated. It did
re-teach me to click "always create a backup" from now on whenever I'm saving
a workbook with lots of hours invested in it.

Have a GREAT weekend!
