error when installing windows xp. HELP!

I am trying to install windows xp onto my computer, again, after it
failed to work.

after it searches thru the 3 1/2 floppy, cd drives looking for a
bootable setup of windows, it finds one in the cd drive as i have put
the installation disk in there.

it goes into a dos sort of mode loading all the files off the cd
necessary for installation and then says press enter to install, r to
fix an error or f3 to exit.

anyway, if i press enter or r, doesn't matter which, the computer sends
out this message:

"Setup did not find any hard disks installed in your computer.

Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to
your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is
correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or
setup program.

Setup cannot continue. To quit setup, press F3."

i don't know what to do?
please help me.

thanks for any help,
tim.
