Error when download/open zip-files.

Until just a few days ago, there were no problem when
downloading zip-files (or other files for that matter
(executables and such)) by choosing "Open" instead
of "Save" in the "Download/Save" dialog that pops up when
you click on something downloadable.

However, since a few days ago, I get an error
saying "Unable to open + searchpath + zipfile" when
downloading something with "Open" instead of "Save". BUT,
if I download and SAVE the file (or zip) FIRST, and THEN
open it by clicking on the file in Explorer - the files
opens/activates/runs just as they should - which
indicates that there must be a problem with
the "Download --> Open" procedure rather than the files
themselves.

I have tried downloading + Opening files ranging
from .zip to .bmp - but NOTHING works - I HAVE to
choose "Save" first in order to view them. I do not use
ANY kind of pack-programs, ONLY Windows XP's built
in .zip-support. I can not recall doing anything
particular which might have brought on this error.

What can I do to rectify this problem ? This sudden lack
of ability to directly open files instead of saving them
after download is of a big concern for me since I roam
sites like www.wincustomize.com - browsing through
hundreds of zip-files per week, all of which I now have
to save to my HD instead of just open them and extract
the file/s that I want.

Is this a common problem? I am having the same issue.
Also, my history in explorer does not update as I surf or
browse files....
