Error using MSConfig

While playing an online game, the window minimizes for no reason. Well,
actually there is a reason, but I don't know what it is. From time to time,
if I am looking, I see a quick popup on the Startup Bar, but its blank and I
can't move fast enough to click on it. I believe this what is causing the
game to minimize.

I worked as Microsoft Tech Support for a couple years so I am very
comfortable with MSConfig and RegEdit, so I am looking at the MSConfig window
and disable everything not windows or antivirus related. There are a couple
things from HP, Google Toolbar, Roxio, run.exe, emMON.exe, nwiz.exe /install
and a couple others that I have unchecked. When I click on apply and/or ok I
get the following Error Message:

"An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service.
You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified
changes."

My account is the Admin account. I can click on ok and it will make the
changes anyway but I don't like the fact that something is telling me I can't
do something when I have in the past without any issue. Anyone have any
suggestions? Also does anyone know what emMON.exe is or what it does? I
have searched and have seen it related to several things.

Thank you in advance for any help given.

run.exe is registered as a downloader. This process usually comes bundled
with a virus or spyware and its main role is to do nothing other than
download other viruses/spyware to your computer. run.exe is Added by the
W32/Rbot-BWF worm. When started, this infection connects to a remote IRC
server where it waits for commands to execute.

UPDATE your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

UPDATE whatever anti-spyware applications that you have and run a full
system scan with each one.

You might want to start in Safe Mode to run your antivirus and anti-spyware
software.

Running a full system antivirus scan or anti-spyware scan in Safe Mode can
be a good idea. Some viruses and other malware like to conceal themselves
in areas Windows protects while using them. Safe mode will prevent those
applications access and therefore unprotect the viruses or other malware
allowing for easier removal.

An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service

Use services.msc *NOT* msconfig.exe!

Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK

Why can't I use msconfig to change my services?

The reason is because with msconfig and Hardware Profiles, you can disable
services that may be vital to boot your system. With the management console
(services.msc) you cannot. Also, msconfig, while unchecking the box, is
disabling the service.

The "Disable All" button also scares me. It should not even be there as no
reason exists to justify disabling "everything."

Thank you very much for the information. I run regular antivirus and spyware
programs both in Safe Mode and Normal Mode, I have had to tell more than one
customer I'm sorry because of a virus or malware. I do have programs that
run in background from time that are actively downloading
programs/updates/crunching numbers.

I haven't ever had this problem with MSConfig before that is why it is
throwing me off. As I said before, I'm shutting down any windows related
services, just those that are third party. After disabling what I did I'm
not getting the one popup on the Start Bar. But as for the error, even if I
just open MSConfig and click on Ok, without changing anything, I still get
the error. I just recently upgraded my hardware (new MB, RAM, Video,
Processor, HD, DVD RAM drive) and I didn't have this problem before then. I
am a bit paranoid since I have put so much time and money into my systems
that even th slightest hiccup sends me into a flurry in an attempt to find
out what is going on.

Do you have Mcafee installed??
I had the same problem, go into msconfig click on any item and hit
apply and you get : An Access Denied error was returned while
attempting to change a service.

I looked at the services tab, saw mcafee services so i removed them all
from the registry, which was a lot of keys to remove. Then tried
msconfig again, it worked.
