Error: The drive or network connection the shortcut refers to is unavailable

I have a single computer with Windows XP Home Edition and
it is not networked. However, when I try to open almost
any application I get the following error message: "Error:
The drive or network connection (the shortcut) refers to
is unavailable". Any help would be greatly appreciated.
