I get the above error(paraphrased) during eight% through
booting win2k pro. (upgrade, SP3), from c:\. I lost the
upgrade disk, so I bought a full OEM version. I don't have
the four boot/b-up disks.

I put the new OEM disk in the drive and turned on my
machine, only to get the cdrom to be ignored(which is
normal thus far), and the windows loading screen on,
then... Error... freeze... ect...

I found my old win98 boot disk and used it, but when I
goto the cdrom drive (auto*.bat sets mscdex to x:\ .), I
get a disk read failure or insert disk error when trying
to get the DIR or *any* other command(except switching
back to 'virtual' c:\ or to floppy). errors suck..

I can't read any of the files on my NTFS c: drive, because
the command prompt I DO get from my boot disk is FAT32
(why the machine wouldn't just translate is beyond me..
you'ld think there could be Something that can attach to
the BIOS for that purpose maybee...)

I can't reformat my drive(s) because I have files on there
that are vital to business..

Please! I'm struggling, and loosing the rest of my hair
with this!

Thank you, Phil

There several ways to recover your data:

1. The easy way: From your backup.

2. The not so easy way: Install your disk as a slave disk in some
other Win2000 PC, then copy the files to wherever you want them.

3. Boot with a Win98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com, then run
"ntfdos.exe /L:EFG" (www.sysinternals.com). You can now
access your hard disk and copy your files one at a time to floppy
disk.

If I was in your position then I would select the easy way. In cases
where the file system is corrupted or the hard disk fails, it's the only
way.

You can also try to fix Win2000: Boot your machine with your
Win2000 CD (change the boot sequence in the BIOS), then
tell the process to repair your existing installation.
