error prevents setup from continuing

HI
I am trying to reinstall/repair an XP on a Dell Laptop.I ran the repair module
and it ran but upon restart it asked for the XP CD and proceeded to go through
the install routine picking up at "installing windows" This runs for a few
minutes and then the error message comes up
an error has been encountered that prevents setup from continuing
set up failed to install the product catalogs.this is a fatal error. The setup
log files should contain more information.
press OK to view the setup log file.
When I press OK the setup log file open but..its empty.
I installed yesterday without any problems an upgrade from 2000 to XP.I
formatted the drive and did a clean installation.Ran a few updates last nite but
not SP2.This started right after I installed Works v6.0 and upon the reboot the
error message said could not log me in and to do a repair installation.
I even went into the recovery console and ran chkdsk with the p switch...no
errors.
Tried this repair twice now and I always come back to the same problem.

any ideas??

This error is the result of the catalogue (cryptographic) files being
corrupted .

Try these steps.

At the screen where the error message is displayed :

1. Press Shift - F10 to get to a DOS Prompt Screen

2. Rename the catroot and catroot2 folders by:
typing and pressing enter after each command.
Ren Catroot Catold
Ren Catroot2 Catroot2

3. Type Exit and restart the computer allowing the repair setup to restart

I hope this helps.

I thank you for your answer.........but I must admit I got impatient and just
re-installed XP.
I tried to do this at one point and it would not even see the installation on
disk and because I was using an upgrade version It would not install.I finally
found the solution on a MS Knowledge base website relating to corrupted registry
files where I deleted certain files in Sytem32 and copied from repair to
system32.At this point the install CD saw that I had XP installed and I was able
to format the drive and reinstall XP.Good thing this was an almost empty laptop
and I was in the process of setting it up.Today I installed SP2(fingers crossed)
and the only thing that mal functioned slightly was my wireless connection.A
uninstall and reinstall of the drivers took care ot that.
I thank you again.
