Error "operation failed" when opening attachments

i have OL2002 and when i receive attachements, common ones like Excel and
Word, when i try to open them, i get the error "operation failed".

if i close OL and open it again, it allows me to open the same attachment
without any problems.

i have searched the KB but do not get any hits on common attachments like
Excel and Word. also the solutions relate to attachments that have been
blocked for security reason.

please can anyone help?

You open them directly from Outlook without saving them first?

sorry Roady, these attachments are Excel and Word attachments that i am
talking about, not strange uncommon ones or .exe's or the like.

yes have tried that article already too!! please note that the attachments
concerned are Excel and Word attachments and NOT security risk ones.
