error on safe mode bootup

When i goto boot up in safe mode to run my virus scan, or
defrag, this is the message i receive;

STOP: c000021a (Fatal System Error)
The Windows Logon Process System process terminated
unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x0000000
0x00000000). The system has been shut down.

Yet the system starts up fine in regular mode.
Any suggestions?

Since you did not specify what operating system you are using I can only
guess that it is Windows 2000. If that is the case, then see the this KB
