Error on Install When XP Pro Upgrade is Registering

I am upgrading WIN98SE with all software patches installed.
When XP install gets to the registering of components, I
get Hardware Malfunction blue screen. The system of
course halts. I can get back to my original OS. I can't
get past when the registery part of the window XP Pro
Install. I have no viruses on this computer.

Any ideas on what it could be failing on when writting the
registery?
 
It just goes to the blue screen with Hardware Malfunction.
No error codes are on the screen.
 
Thanks for the repsonse.

The Blue scree gives no codes. Just the general text
of "Hardware Malfucntion". Strange that it would go all
the way through until it is writting registery settings.

Thanks for any help you can give.
